Flora & Fauna

Age: 13 and under

Enter the kingdoms of plants, animals, and fungi! Flora and Fauna will be your guides through the natural world in this weekly interactive auditorium series. Activities, songs, and hands-on fun with nature.

June and July only.

Naturally Crafty

When: Every Tuesday 10am

Where: GPNC lobby

Cost: FREE

Age: all ages

We will provide the materials for you to make something to remember your visit to the GPNC! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Come-and-go, 2 hours.

Nature Adventures

When: Mondays 1pm

Each week in June and July, one of our naturalists will share their knowledge of and experiences with nature and wildlife. If you have questions we can try to answer them, too. Get out of the heat and enjoy some cool stuff!

Story Time

When: Every Wednesday 11am

Where: GPNC Koch Habitat Hall

Cost: FREE

Age: 0-6

Join us inside the GPNC’s Koch Habitat Hall for story time. Mostly for little ones, but everyone is welcome.

Adventure Time

When: Every Wednesday 11am

Where: GPNC

Cost: FREE

Age: 7+

Throughout the year GPNC hosts Storytime for kids 0-6 years old. Adventure Time gives older kids a fun time while younger kids are at Story Time. Activities will vary between hikes, animal programs, and crafts.

Roving Interpretation

When: It's a mystery!

Where: Out on the trails

Cost: FREE

Age: all ages

Each week our staff will hit the trails with a roving program cart equipped with artifacts, fun, and maybe even live animals. Stop and chat with them to get a card for a free item at the gift shop! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates

Kansas Critters at KWE

When: Fridays 12pm

Where: Kansas Wildlife Exhibit

Cost: FREE

Age: all ages

Visit the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit in Riverside to get an up-close encounter with Kansas  wildlife! Watch us feed the animals and view some of the more elusive (nocturnal) residents. Each week we’ll highlight a different Kansas animal.

18+ Adult Programs

Zombie Apocalypse Bootcamp

When: August 3

Where: GPNC

Cost: $20

Age: 16+ (12-15 year-olds are welcome with participating adults only)

Communications are down. Shops are pillaged. Civilization is collapsing. Will you be a survivor or join the horde of walking dead?? With our new bootcamp, the odds are in your favor. Learn orienteering, archery, wilderness first aid, wild plant and animal harvesting, and even filet fish and cook your own wild meal. If you pass your final exam and outlast our horde of zombs, you’ll be a certified Zombie Apocalypse Survivor.

Wildflower Walks

When: 4th Saturdays 9am

Where: GPNC Trails (meet in lobby)

Cost: FREE

Age: Adults, but interested children are welcome to join

Join us on the 4th Saturday of the month May-August at 9 a.m. for a leisurely stroll along Cottonwood Trail (1.7 miles) to look for wildflowers. Should last about 1.5 hours but attendees are welcome to cut out early. Learn how to identify flowers and watch as the prairie changes throughout the year and new blooms appear. Good shoes, hat, and insect repellent recommended for optional off-path excursions.

Naughty Nature

When: Tuesdays, 7-8pm

Where: Headshots Bar & Grill

Cost: No admission

Age: Adults only

Leave the kids at home and have a drink: it’s time to talk nature unfiltered. Hop down the street to Headshots Bar & Grill, where GPNC naturalists Todd, Lyndzee, and Rachel will talk about sex, alcohol abuse, anatomy, violence, and other R-rated tales from the adult side of nature.

June 18 - August 6

Archery Club

When: Every other Sunday

Where: GPNC

Cost: FREE

Age: Adults only 4 - 5:30pm

Whether you’ve never shot a bow or you’re an expert marksman, Archery Club is perfect for perfecting your aim. Join us every other Sunday where you’ll get hands-on help and tips to improve. Join the club on our Facebook page to get updates.

Nature Journal Club

When: 2nd Saturdays, with 3 additional summer field trips.

Where: GPNC, some sessions are offsite.

Cost: FREE

Age: Adults, but interested children are welcome to join.

Nature Journaling is about sitting down with nature, looking closely, and deepening your curiosity about the world around us. Each Nature Journal Club meetup will include group exercises and lessons led by a GPNC Naturalist, followed by on-your-own free journaling time.

Field Trips are May 11, June 22, and July 20. Spend time with nature and like-minded journalers on location. Transportation not provided, but carpooling is encouraged.

NJC is NOT designed for children, but children are welcome to journal with us.

Mushroom Club

When: Excursions are announced on Facebook.

Where: Chisholm Creek Park, or offsite sessions as announced.

Cost: FREE

Age: Adults, but interested children are welcome to join.

Join our resident mushroom nerd, Lyndzee Rhine, as she combs the woods for fungus. All are welcome to join her as she scours the parks of Wichita.

Special Events

Walk With Wildlife

When: May 18, 9am - 3pm

Where: GPNC Trails

Cost: $2 per person

Age: all ages

How many times have you taken a hike in a wildlife area and not seen any wildlife? As you walk a 1/2 mile paved loop of our trail system, visit stations set up along the way and see dozens of species you may never have a chance to see otherwise!

OK Kids

When: June 1, 10am - 3pm

Where: GPNC

Cost: FREE

Age: all ages

This day is all about getting kids outdoors. Join the naturalists at the nature center for a day of FREE crafts and activities. There will be crafts, hikes, archery, fishing, and much more.

Lunch will be offered for a small fee.

Camping 101 Overnight

When: June 22 5pm - June 23 10am

Where: GPNC

Cost: $5 per person, or 5 for $20

Age: all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult

If you’ve never gone camping, now’s your chance! Come learn camping tips and tricks, fire starting, and tent pitching. Also, enjoy s’mores, camp side dinner, a night hike, and learning about native wildlife.

Nature Trivia Night: Summer Edition

When: June 11, 6 - 8pm

Where: GPNC

Cost: FREE

Age: all ages

Put your nature knowledge to the test at this pun-filled event. We’ll have six riveting rounds of trivia, prizes given for the winning team. This event is open to the public so bring your friends. We ask that you have teams with no more than 6 players.

Members Only: Natural History Murder Mystery

When: July 11, 6 - 8 pm

Where: GPNC

Cost: FREE for our Friends.

Age: all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Interested in helping us solve a natural history murder mystery? Members will be receiving invitations and more information this summer.

Moth Mania

When: Friday July 26, 9 - 10:30 pm

Where: GPNC Parking Lot and Quail Trail

Cost: FREE

Age: All ages

Celebrate National Moth Week by marveling at moths and other nocturnal critters! Walk at your own pace for this come-and-go event, visiting moth attracting stations around the lawn and Quail Trail.

Children's Programs

Herp Hunt

When: Thurs May 30, Thurs June 20, Thurs July 18. 9 - 10:30 am

Where: GPNC

Cost: $7 members/$10 non-members

Age: 3rd grade and up

Put on your muck boots and venture into the park in search of reptiles and amphibians! Expect to get a bit dirty. Long pants recommended. It’s a turtle-y good time.

Nature Play

Age: Preschool

There is no better space for kids to learn than the outdoors, and there is no better play resource than nature. Preschoolers will PLAY in nature. Naturalists and volunteers will be your guides to model interaction with nature; preschool children will provide the imagination.
