The Great Plains Nature Center is a cooperative venture between the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the City of Wichita Department of Park and Recreation and the Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center. This joint effort between federal, state, city and non-profit agencies has proven highly effective in providing an educational facility where the public can learn about wildlife and conservation of the Great Plains. These partners share a common goal of providing opportunities for the public to develop an appreciation for wildlife and the environment, promoting sound stewardship of natural resources.
The partnership between the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the City of Wichita Department of Park and Recreation began in 1996, the non-profit Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center was created shortly after. The Great Plains Nature Center visitor center opened to the public August 2000.
Each partner is valuable to the operation and education at the Great Plains Nature Center.

This state agency aims to conserve and enhance Kansas' wildlife and its habitats, ensuring current and future generations appreciate and enjoy these living resources and associated recreation, while informing the public of the status of Kansas' natural resources, gaining understanding and support in achieving this mission.
City of Wichita Department of Park and Recreation
The City of Wichita is a leading-edge organization serving a dynamic and inclusive community.
For over 100 years, the City of Wichita has promoted the community’s access to nature, parks and recreation. Our parks and recreation system is a reflection of the community and the community’s long held values that support parkland, green space, recreational activities, golf, fitness and wellness.
Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center
The Friends is a 501(c)(3) organization formed to support the educational mission of the center. Financial support is made possible through grants, proceeds from the Owl’s Nest Gift Shop, memberships and donations.
