Why is the building closing?
The building requires major foundations repairs. This is also an opportunity to upgrade exhibits and improve accessibility.
How long will the building be closed?
The building will be closed approximately one year for foundation repairs. We expect the repairs to be completed and to reopen fall 2027. However, we will be closed for an additional period during the exhibit installation, which is currently in the concept phase.
Will animals still be on-site?
Animal ambassadors will be cared for by GPNC staff and partners during this time offsite. They will return when the building reopens.
Where can visitors find restrooms during closure?
Chisholm Creek Park has two outdoor restroom buildings: one at the Oliver entrance and one near the large GPNC parking lot. These restrooms are open mid-March through mid-October.
Will programs continue?
Yes! Outreach, outdoor education, and select events will continue throughout the renovation period. Educators and community groups are encouraged to contact the GPNC about programming as they normally would- Click here for more information.
Will the park be open during construction?
Yes, Chisholm Creek Park will stay open daily from dawn to dusk.
Can the community still volunteer?
Yes! Volunteers are encouraged to still contact GPNC about opportunities. Click here for more information.
Can I still check out a Discovery Box?
Discovery Boxes will be unavailable until further notice starting summer 2026. However, they will come back revamped and still free!
Can I still purchase a National Park Pass?
No, America the Beautiful (or National Park) Passes will be unavailable for purchase in person. Your last day to purchase in person is June 18th, 2026. However, you can purchase them online here: https://store.usgs.gov/recreational-passes
Will the cost still be free when you reopen?
Yes! Entry will stay free.
What will happen to the old exhibits and items?
Some of our GPNC exhibits, taxidermy, and treasures will go to other nature centers, organizations, or into our storage. Others will be sold in our Taxidermy & Curiosities Sale June 8th-18th. Learn more at gpnc.org/programs-events
